Why the Tracker?
The Media Freedom Violation Tracking System provides a comprehensive and innovative solution for monitoring Media freedom violations across Nepal.
By offering real-time, open data, the system ensures timely access to critical information on threats to journalists and media organizations. Drawing from sources across all provinces in Nepal, it provides disaggregated data by location, type of violation, and gender, making it a powerful tool for targeted analysis and intervention. Traditional monitoring indicators largely focused on physical attacks and legal threats, leaving out critical issues such asmdigital harassment, cyberattacks, and online censorship.
By refining these indicators and incorporating new developments, particularly in the digital space, the Tracker provides a more comprehensive and up-to-date tool for monitoring press freedom violations in both physical and online spaces.
How is the Tracker developed?
The indicators and data-gathering methods were developed through consultations with media organizations, civil society groups, government and intergovernmental bodies, including Federation of Nepali Journalists, the National Human Rights Commission, and UNESCO.
This collaborative process has ensured that the system reflects the full range of threats to media freedom, both traditional and emerging. The inclusive approach has strengthened the system’s reliability, making it a trusted resource for monitoring and protecting press freedom in Nepal.
